In Lincoln and the country round it people held that it was unlucky to carry anything out of the house on New Year’s morning before something had been brought in. So on that morning each member of the family would carry in a small piece of coal, or some other trifle, to keep off the misfortune that would otherwise follow them. The country people put the belief into a rhyme: take out, then take in, bad luck will begin; take in, then take out, good luck comes about.
