A manuscript account of Eton College written in 1560 records that on the feast of the Circumcision, New Year’s Day, the boys played for small New Year’s gifts before and after supper. They also had a custom that day, for good luck’s sake, of making verses and sending them to the provost and masters, or giving them to one another. Brand noted that George Buchanan once sent Mary Queen of Scots a New Year’s gift of the same poetic kind.
