Wishes through the keyhole in Cleveland

1 January · Cleveland, Yorkshire

No longer kept

Early on New Year’s morning the lads of Cleveland called a greeting through their neighbours’ keyholes, wishing them a pantry full of roast beef and a barrel full of beer. West Riding children recited the same rhyme when they went round for New Year’s gifts. In Northumberland the season’s visiting, with rich cake and wine, was called fadging, or eating fadge.

You may constantly hear the lads of that district calling it through their neighbour's keyholes early on New Year's morning.
