At Stamfordham the first-foot on New Year’s morning had to be a bachelor, and he usually carried in a shovelful of coals, though whisky was taking its place. One villager always first-footed the blacksmith’s house nearby. The year somebody else got there first by accident, it was taken as an ill omen, and sure enough the house was broken into during the hay harvest and half a sovereign stolen.

At Stamfordham, in Northumberland, the first-foot must be a bachelor. He generally brings in a shovelful of coals, but, unfortunately, whisky is coming into fashion as his offering.
