A gentleman of Preston told Notes and Queries that for many years he had called on an elderly lady early on New Year’s Day at her own request, because he was fair-complexioned and so thought to bring good luck for the year. One year he could not go, and her first caller was a dark-complexioned man. That year, she held, brought her sickness, trouble and losses in business. Chambers prints the story beside the Scottish first-footing customs.
