The wassailers’ blessing and the dry house

Wassailers at the gate sang blessings on the household for the twelve months ahead, but a house that gave them no ale or beer was left with a parting reproach. In Herrick’s The Wassaile they wish the family full bins, larders, dairies, hives and hens and a good year for plough and harrow, then, finding nothing to drink, go off saying the mean house will one day regret the luck it lost.

Alas! we blesse, but see none here, / That brings us either Ale or Beere; / In a drie-house all things are neere.
