To learn whom she would marry, a girl went out on the evening the first new moon appeared after New Year’s Day, stood over the bars of a gate or stile, and hailed the moon. She asked it to reveal that night who her husband would be, then went straight to bed to dream of him. Aubrey knew two gentlewomen who had done this as young maids and dreamt of the men who later married them. A marginal note added that some said any new moon would serve, and that in Yorkshire they knelt on a ground-fast stone.
