Ellis’s edition of Brand gathers several warnings for New Year’s Day. Nobody was to be allowed to take a light out of the house, or there would be a death in the household before the year was out. Ashes, dirty water or anything else, however worthless, should not be thrown out that day either, though as many honestly gotten goods as possible might be brought in. It was also thought to bode ill luck for the whole year if the first visitor to come into the house that morning was a woman.
No light from the house on New Year’s Day

Lore and belief
Never allow any to take a light out of your house on New Year's Day; a death in the household, before the expiration of the year, is sure to occur if it be allowed.
