In the old farmhouses of County Durham nothing was allowed to leave the house on New Year’s Day, though anything might be brought in. Henderson remembered, as a boy, the mistress of a farm warning her servants on New Year’s Eve under pain of dismissal. Ashes, dish-water and potato-parings were all kept indoors until the next day, while coals, firewood and bread came in as usual.
