A visitor to friends at Cambridge was woken at seven on New Year’s morning by the familiar Good Friday cry of one a penny, two a penny, buns, all hot. At breakfast buns were on the table, and he was told they were New Year’s cakes. It was the custom at Cambridge to have them every New Year’s Day, cried and sold in the streets just like hot cross buns except that they were not crossed.
