Suitors used to give New Year’s gifts to the Lord Chancellor in hope of a favourable judgment. When one Mrs Goaker gave Sir Thomas More a pair of gloves with forty pounds in gold angels inside, he kept the gloves out of good manners and returned the money. Sandys added that the officers of the court also gave the Chancellor New Year’s gifts until Lord Cowper refused them in 1705, and that Sir Matthew Hale gave the value of his New Year’s plate to the poor prisoners.

Mistresse, since it were against good manners to refuse your New-year's gift, I am content to take your gloves, but as for the lining I utterly refuse it.
