When George Ferrers of Lincoln’s Inn was made Lord of Misrule to divert the young Edward VI, he had a different costume for Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Twelfth Day. For New Year’s Day it was a robe of red baudekin with an embroidered guard of purple silver, a matching coat, hose slopwise with breeches of cloth of gold figured in red and green velvet, and red baudekin buskins, costing thirty-four pounds fourteen shillings. His whole expenses that Christmas came to more than six hundred and fifty pounds.
