On Shrove Tuesday the boys threw at cocks and killed them, and the birds went into the pot. Poor Robin joked that the broth made from the boiled cocks helped men get their wives with child. The same jest was still being printed in the almanac for 1740, beside pancakes and fritters.

The Boys are busy now a throwing, And killing Cocks, which spoils their crowing. The Broths of which, the Cocks being boil'd, Makes men to get their Wives with Child.
