The Book of Knowledge of 1703 held that whatever was planted or sown on Shrove Tuesday would always stay green. The same book gave a rule for finding the day: Shrove Tuesday was always the Tuesday after the first new moon following Candlemas. A manuscript miscellany of 1691 in Ellis’s hands added that wind on the night of Shrove Tuesday foretold a death among the learned and much fish dying in the following summer.
