On northern farms each servant, man or woman, had to fry and toss a pancake on Shrove Tuesday in order of seniority. Anyone who had not eaten their pancake before the next one was done was dragged out of the house in a wheelbarrow and tipped onto the dung heap. Denham wrote that some farmhouses still kept the custom.

if they did not get it ate before the next one was enough, they were dragged out of the house, put into a wheelbarrow and whemmeled over upon the muck-midden.
