Sir Frederick Eden, drawing on the Statistical Account of Scotland, recorded a standing Shrove Tuesday football match in a Midlothian parish between the married and the unmarried women. He noted as a remarkable fact that the married women always won. Hone prints the parish as Inverness, which is not in Midlothian; it was most likely Inveresk, the parish of the Musselburgh fishwives.
