At North Walsham, about forty years before Strutt wrote, some jokers put an owl into the earthen pot used for Shrove Tuesday cock-throwing, and fixed the head and tail of a dead cock so they showed as a live bird’s would. A labouring man broke the pot after several tries, the owl flew off, and he was left with the potsherds. The town laughed at him so much that he left and, Strutt was told, never came back.

At North Walsham, in Norfolk, about forty years ago, some wags put an owl into one of these vessels; and having procured the head and tail of a dead cock, they placed them in the same position as if they had appertained to a living one
