At Shrovetide in Essex and Suffolk the farm men went shroving and threshed a fat hen, and if a blindfolded man could kill her she was theirs. The maids meanwhile made fritters and pancakes in plenty. Tusser counted it among the ploughman’s feast days and added that the slut of the house should have one pancake, for company’s sake.

At Shroftide to shrouing, go thresh the fat hen, / if blindfild can kill hir, then giue it thy men. / Maides, fritters and pancakes ynow see ye make: / let slut haue one pancake, for companie sake.
