At the grammar school in Manchester the master provided cocks on Shrove Tuesday, which were buried up to their necks for the boys to shy at, and he was well paid for them. The same cruel sport was kept at the school at Wyke near Ashford on the feast of St Nicholas. Chambers lists it among the old grammar-school perquisites that swelled the masters’ small salaries.
