In the hamlet of Pinner, by Harrow on the Hill, throwing at cocks on Shrove Tuesday was a parish occasion, and the money it raised went towards the poor rate: the accounts record twelve shillings received for cocks at Shrovetide in 1622. Brand found the sport still kept in 1791 in a field by the church at Heston, although constables had often been sent to stop it. The owner trained his bird for weeks beforehand to dodge a thrown stick, and a well-trained cock could earn its master a good sum at twopence for three throws.
