At Sheffield, pancakes were said to be thrown from the church roofs on Shrove Tuesday as the clock struck twelve. The day was treated as a minor All Fools’ Day, and children were sent off to catch the falling pancakes. Denham thought the adults who sent them more foolish than the children.

for many are the children whom more foolish adults are guilty of sending on the bootless errand of catching them in their descent, the moment the church clock strikes twelve.
