Leek pasties at Earls Barton

Shrove Tuesday · Earls Barton, Northamptonshire

No longer kept

On Shrove Tuesday the shoemakers of Earls Barton carried a chaff-cutter and a heap of leeks onto the village green and chopped them in public for leek pasties. The chopping was a show in itself, watched by the whole village. Dyer cites the Gentleman’s Magazine of 1867.

A party of shoemakers, after procuring a chaff-cutter and a quantity of leeks, proceed to the green, where they publicly chop the vegetable to the amusement of the spectators.
