Throwing at cocks on Shrove Tuesday was said to be revenge on the birds whose crowing had betrayed an English plot against the Danes. In the tale, the townsfolk of a great city planned to rise against their Danish masters by night, but the crowing and fluttering of cocks gave them away. Once free, they knocked cocks on the head every Shrove Tuesday, the day it had happened, and the sport spread across the country. Taylor took the story from Ornithologia Nova of 1743.
