Brand was told, and saw for himself on 5 February 1788, that at Alnwick the town waits came playing to the castle at two o’clock every Shrove Tuesday. A football was then thrown over the castle walls to the crowd waiting below. Brand set it among the other Shrovetide football games he knew of. Shrovetide football is still played at Alnwick, with the ball brought from the castle to start the game.

the waits belonging to the town come playing to the Castle every year on Shrove Tuesday, at two o'clock p. m., when a Foot-ball was thrown over the Castle walls to the populace.
