In Kilrush Shrove Tuesday was the busiest wedding day of the year, and the Catholic priests were marrying couples from sunrise until midnight. The usual fee was two and a half guineas, and some couples under sixteen paid it with their last penny. Anyone who missed the day had to wait until Easter Monday because of Lent. Dyer took this from Mason’s Statistical Account of Ireland.
