In Wales Shrove Tuesday was still sometimes called Guttling or Guttes-Tuesday, from the feasting that came before the Lenten fast. Pancakes were sent up at dinner on the day with unfailing regularity. Peter Roberts added in 1815 that the cruel sport of throwing at cocks had by then mostly, and he believed wholly, been given up in Wales.

Shrove Tuesday acquired the significant appellation of Guttling, or Guttes-Tuesday, which is not yet wholly obsolete; and pancakes are still sent up on this day at dinner with a persevering punctuality.
