At Shrovetide the scholars of the school in Crosthwaite parish each brought a cock to fight at the school, and gave the master a present of money for allowing it. Besides his stipend the master took a fee from his scholars called the cockpenny. John Housman, who supplied the note, supposed the founder and parents had thought learning made boys too soft and meant the sport to harden them.
