Heath’s account of the Isles of Scilly says that every Shrove Tuesday, once the throwing at cocks was over, the island boys spent the evening throwing stones at the doors of the houses. They claimed it as a privilege from time immemorial and went unchecked. The price of peace was pancakes or money. Heath was told the same custom was kept in some parts of Cornwall and in several provinces of Spain.
