Until a few years before Hone wrote, Shrove Tuesday was the great holiday of the London apprentices. Hone thought it grew from the sports boys were allowed at school that day, and recalled the licence of the old city apprentices, who joined every street brawl and even marched in bodies to petition the House of Commons. He quoted a satire of 1675 mocking them for scorning the humble holiday games of trap and football in Finsbury Fields.
