At Newcastle upon Tyne the great bell of St Nicholas’s church was tolled at twelve o’clock on Shrove Tuesday. At the sound the shops were shut, the offices closed and all business stopped, and a little carnival followed for the rest of the day. Brand, who knew Newcastle well, put it at the head of his pancake customs, noting that in the north of England the day was called Fasten’s E’en.
