In Queen Elizabeth’s time the cook at Eton fastened a pancake on Shrove Tuesday to the crow, the iron ring that served as a knocker, on the school door. Chambers sets it beside the Westminster School custom, still kept in his day, of the cook tossing a pancake over the bar for the boys to scramble for.

In the time of Elizabeth, it was a practice at Eton for the cook to fasten a pancake to a crow (the ancient equivalent of the knocker) upon the school door.
