On Shrove Tuesday every year the rough ball game of knappan was played on the Berry Sands between the parishes of Nevern and Newport in Pembrokeshire. It was the first of five fixed knappan days in the county. Peter Roberts printed the account from an Elizabethan manuscript by a man who had often played.
