Bees singing on Christmas Eve

24 December

Lore and belief

Alongside the belief that the cattle knelt in their stalls at midnight on Christmas Eve, it was said that the bees sang in their hives at the same hour. Bread baked on Christmas Eve was believed never to go mouldy. Chambers saw in these beliefs the idea that the whole of nature joined in celebrating the birth of Christ.

Bees were also said to sing in their hives at the same time, and bread baked on Christmas Eve, it was averred, never became mouldy.
