It was held that on the night before Christmas the powers of darkness were helpless and no evil could touch mankind. The cock was said to crow all night long, and his watchfulness kept every harmful spirit away. Shakespeare gave the belief to Marcellus in Hamlet, where no spirit walks, no fairy takes and no witch has power to charm in that hallowed season. Hone added that cocks really could be heard crowing through the long nights of Christmas.
