The threepenny loaf at Aston Hall

No longer kept

On Christmas Eve at the house of the Holt family at Aston, near Birmingham, a table was set in the hall after supper with a brown loaf bearing twenty silver threepences on top, a tankard of ale, pipes and tobacco. The steward led in the servants one at a time, each covered with a winnowing sheet and showing only the right hand, laid on the loaf. The two oldest servants, as judges, tried to name each one, and anyone they failed to name took a threepence. A servant who had not slept in the house the night before lost the right, and when the money was gone all were free to drink, dance and sing.
