In the North it was thought that turning away the first yessle-cup singer at Christmas without a gift meant losing the luck of the whole coming year. Every family that could afford it had a Yule cheese and Yule cake ready for Christmas Eve. It was unlucky to cut either of them before then.

To send a "Yessle-cup Singer" away from your doors unrequited (at least the first that comes) is to forfeit the good luck of all the approaching year.
