No evil spirit abroad on Christmas Eve

Lore and belief

Christmas Eve was the one night of the year when no evil spirit could walk in Wales. Otherwise ghosts were thought to come at midnight and stay until cockcrow, so nobody would stay out past twelve or set out on a journey until the cock had crowed that the way was clear.

Christmas Eve, however, was an exception, for during that night, no evil Spirit could appear.
