Alongside the Yule log a candle of great size, called the Yule candle or Christmas candle, lit the table through the evening. Brand noted a stone candle socket carved with the Holy Lamb in the buttery of St John’s College, Oxford, which had held the Christmas candle burned on the high table at supper through the twelve nights of Christmas. Chandlers used to send large mould candles to their customers as a Christmas present, as grocers sent raisins for the pudding.
