People born on Christmas Eve were thought to be unable to see spirits, even when a dog at their side plainly saw one and crept whining to its master. Grose set this among the rules of ghost lore he gathered, alongside the belief that no ghost could walk on Christmas Eve at all, which he traced to Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
