Aubrey recorded that in several parts of Oxfordshire it was the custom at Christmas for the maidservant to ask the manservant for ivy to decorate the house. If he refused, or neglected to bring it in, the maids stole a pair of his breeches and nailed them up on the gate in the yard or by the highway. In other places the same refusal cost a man his privileges under the mistletoe.
