At Christmas the street carol singers of Warwickshire still sang Dives and Lazarus, in which two serpents come out of hell for the rich man’s soul and tell him he has a place provided there to sit upon a serpent’s knee. Hone described the solemn way a Warwickshire chanter drew out the words serpent’s knee to their utmost length, before a crowd that seemed quite ready to believe it. He guessed the picture came from old woodcuts of Lazarus sitting in Abraham’s lap.
