The ox cake at Tretire

No longer kept

On Christmas Eve at Tretire the farm men made a cake, pushed a stick through it and fixed it on the horn of an ox, saying words that begged a good crop of corn for the master. The men and boys stood round, and if the ox tossed the cake behind it belonged to the men, if in front to the boys. A correspondent signing A. B. and C. wrote in 1820 that they drank cider from a wooden bottle and repeated the charm.

They make a Cake, poke a stick through it, fasten it upon the horn of an ox, and say certain words, begging a good crop of corn for the master.
