The Yule logs of old country houses were great trees, big enough to be used as a weapon. Brand, quoting a note in the Gentleman’s Magazine supplement for 1790, tells how in the Civil War a Captain Hosier burned the house of Mr Barker at Haughmond Abbey near Shrewsbury by setting fire to its Yule log. He set the story beside Grose’s account of the northern farm servants, who drank ale at every meal for as long as their knotty Christmas block lasted.
