Little troops of boys and girls at Newcastle upon Tyne and other places in the north of England went from house to house a few nights before Christmas, on Christmas Eve and on Christmas night, knocking and singing. They kept the old cry of Hagmena and always ended their begging song by wishing a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Brand compared them with the children of Franconia who went round on the Thursday nights before Christmas.
