In Devon the Yule log took the form of the ashen faggot, a bundle of ash sticks bound with bands of ash, ideally nine of them. On Christmas Eve the farm labourers bound the rods together and dragged the faggot with horses to the farmhouse hearth, where master, family and servants sat together on equal terms. There were games of bobbing for apples and catching treacle cakes in the mouth, with cider or egg-hot to drink. For every band that burst in the fire the master had to send round a fresh bowl, and the faggot is still burned on Christmas Eve at a few West Country inns.
