Waldron wrote that on the evening of 24 December all the Manx servants had a holiday. They did not go to bed but rambled about until the church bells rang at midnight, and after prayers went to hunt the wren. When they had killed one they laid it on a bier and carried it with mock solemnity to the parish church, burying it there and singing dirges over it in Manx, which they called her knell. After that, Christmas began.
