In most Suffolk farmhouses it was an old custom that any servant who could bring in a branch of hawthorn in full blossom on the first of May earned a dish of cream for breakfast. By the time of Brand’s editor the custom had lapsed, not because masters grudged the cream but because the servants could no longer find the white-thorn in flower. A short rhyme went with it, ending with a request for a cup of the mistress’s cream.
