When Bishop Latimer came to preach in a country town on a holiday, he found the church locked because the parish had gone out to gather for Robin Hood. He waited half an hour for the key and then had to give way to Robin Hood’s men. Strutt told the story, from a sermon Latimer preached before Edward VI, to show how popular the Robin Hood pageants of the May-games were.

Syr, this is a busy day with us, we cannot hear you; it is Robin Hoode's day; the parish are gone abroad to gather for Robin Hood; I pray you let them not.
