On May morning the girls of Thaxted went round waving branches before the doors of the townspeople. In neighbouring Debden the girls still sang an old May carol as they carried their garlands from house to house, but at Thaxted, Chambers noted, the song seemed to have been forgotten and only the branches remained.

At Thaxted, the girls wave branches before the doors of the inhabitants, but they seem to have forgotten the song altogether.
