Stukeley recorded in 1724 that there was a Maypole Hill near Horncastle in Lincolnshire. Every May Day the boys went in procession to the hill carrying May gads, white willow wands with the bark peeled off and cowslips tied round them. At night they had a bonfire and other merriment. Stukeley, who saw Roman and Druid survivals everywhere, took it for a relic of the Floralia.
